Geared to the customer

Every situation has its own specific requirements as regards lighting. But you want to be certain to make a sensible choice as far as luminaires are concerned (type, quantities, locations, et cetera), light sources (technology, light level, light quality, colour rendering, colour stability, et cetera) and for instance, maintenance (accessibility). This is why IMT not only sets extremely high requirements to its lighting & control systems, IMT will also make an expert analysis of your situation.

A thorough analysis

The light consultants of IMT can make such an analysis for you. This extra service includes a proposal with drawings, light calculation and an explanation, tailored to the applicable (NEN) legislation. Apart from this, the cost of ownership can be taken into account. Such a proposal is in accordance with the requirements and possibilities in your specific situation.

‘With IQL we cut down on maintenance and limit nuisance at the same time’

‘The Municipality of The Hague has approximately 60,000 luminaires that it is responsible for. And every year at least seven thousand malfunction cases occur. This means a lot of costly maintenance and annoyance for citizens due to defective lighting and road closures. With the maintenance free lighting and guarantees of IMT we can finally cut this back.

For instance, we care able to preserve the Berlage luminaires as historical street furniture thanks to the retrofit option of IMT. They discovered that the high recurring mechanical failure rate of these luminaires was caused by poor thermal management. And because the design and the mast could not be changed, IQL lighting provided the perfect solution. After all, IMT gives us a five-year maintenance free lighting guarantee. This is why during breakdown maintenance we replace the current two thousand QL light sources by … IQL.

For tram rail lighting, too, IQL proves to be ideal. The fact of the matter is that HTM obliges us to carry out replacement and maintenance in the evening or at night. But this involves extra high costs. Therefore, we searched for luminaires that were more sustainable. And because IQL lasts longer and is vibration resistant on top of that, this is the type of lighting that will gradually be placed in all 400 luminaires.

IMT is a professional, dedicated partner, who is pleasant to work with, if only because the supplies and systems are so reliable.
For us these are solid grounds to raise IQL even to our standard for main roads. We also recommend other cities to turn to IMT!’

Heijmans

‘No more problems with vibrations due to heavy transport’

‘Heijmans Techniek & Mobiliteit is a specialist in the maintenance of public lighting and traffic control devices. We also take care of temporary traffic control measures. We work frequently for municipalities such as Capelle aan den IJssel, Krimpen aan den IJssel and Waddinxveen. But we also work for various road construction firms and for the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management (RWS). For instance, we take care of the lighting maintenance of the Caland bridge for RWS. This steel lift bridge forms part of the Betuwe route and forms a strategic connection between the Botlek and the German Ruhrgebied together with 2x2 lanes and two rail freight tracks.

Due to the intensive and heavy road & rail freight traffic and the strong wind, luminaires constantly broke down on the Caland bridge. As a result, the bridge guard did not have enough view on the road users, whose safety was at stake. Besides, we had to block the roads completely for the replacement and maintenance of luminaires. This is not only very costly for RWS, because it involved closing down two lanes on an hourly basis every time. It also causes a lot of nuisance for the road users.

Then we have searched for a more sustainable solution for RWS and this is how we found IMT. As their IQL lighting is used on drilling platforms, amongst other things, it simply had to be more vibration resistant. And indeed: in the past there were at all times defective luminaires on the Caland bridge, but not anymore now. This is because early 2008 we have completely replaced all 30 luminaires by the heaviest model of IQL luminaires. Everything keeps functioning and this enables RWS to guarantee the safety on the Caland bridge even better. This is why we have already proposed to use IQL lighting on other bridges as well…’

BAM Techniek (AQUEDUCT ABCOUDE)

The new aqueduct in the vicinity of Abcoude is illuminated by maintenance free lighting of IMT. In 2002 BAM Civiel was assigned by ProRail to design and construct the aqueduct. The civil engineering project was part of a larger infrastructure project in which the rail tracks between Amsterdam and Utrecht would be doubled.

In 2003 IMT won the assignment from of BAM Techniek to supply the lighting for the aqueduct. Not only did the luminaires have to be maintenance free. They also had to be resistant to humidity, heat, the vibrations of the trains passing underneath and a pressure wave of at least 200 km/h.

The aqueduct is in use since 1 December 2005 and one year later the rail connection followed suit. The lighting at the aqueduct functions well, just like the lighting delivered by IMT for the ten emergency exits and the emergency staircases.
BAM Civiel is an operating company of the Koninklijke BAM Groep N.V., who is market leader in the Netherlands and one of the largest construction companies of Europe.

RWS Zeeland
(Swing bridges Sluiskil and Sas van Gent)

The Dutch Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management (Province of Zeeland Department) has equipped the swing bridges Sluiskil and Sas van Gent with IMT lighting.
The swing bridge Sluiskil forms part of the provincial main road N61 that passes over the border-crossing channel from Ghent to Terneuzen. Every day five to ten thousand motor vehicles cross this bridge, of which nearly one third is freight traffic. The bridge is also used by three to five freight trains per day. The bridge was built at the end of the sixties of the twentieth century and measures 310 metres (length) by 28 metres (width), including the movable part measuring approximately 147 metres (length).

In 2001 the lighting of the bridge near Sluiskil was renewed. The existing lighting broke down several times per year due to the constant vibrations of lorries and freight trains. The only way to replace them was to close the road and railway to all traffic, up to four times per year. In order to overcome these problems the choice was made for maintenance free lighting of IMT (Helios type IQL165-JCH IP66 and type IQL85-JCH IP 66). “We have opted for IMT, because IQL is the only vibration resistant light source”, says Alwin Neve of the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management , Province of Zeeland Department.

The Swing bridge Sas van Gent (156 metres long and 22 metres wide) is als equipped with the maintenance free Helios (IQL165-JCH IP66) Street/ Area lighting of IMT.

Platform lighting NS train station Eindhoven

Eindhoven Railway station is the junction of two main rail connections of Dutch Rail (NS): Amsterdam-Maastricht and Rotterdam-Venlo. Every day, Dutch Rail transports 200,000 travellers from and to this station. This makes Eindhoven one of the busiest Dutch railway transport hubs outside the so-called Randstad.

In 2005 it became evident that the platform lighting at the eastern side did not meet the regulations. The lux level of the luminaires as below standard and the lighting was declared unfit. Apart from this, Dutch Rail was faced with high expenses for lighting maintenance. This was caused by the strict regulations for work carried out in the vicinity of overhead wires. Due to these two circumstances NS had to search for a maintenance free luminaire.

The new luminaires would have to meet strict requirements. Not only should they have adequate light output (even under low temperatures) and a proper colour recognition. They also had to be resistant to vibrations and dirt caused by sparking. Apart from this, the luminaires had to be maintenance free and had to fit on the existing masts. After all, the masts and cabling were still working fine. And by replacing the luminaires only, the nuisance for trains and passengers coul remain limited.

The solution was found in IQL lighting of IMT. NS had already good experiences with Helios IQL 85 and decided in 2006 to have 55 luminaires of this type installed. The luminaire fits perfectly onto the existing mast and has a good light level. And thanks to the flat glass pane, dirt formation caused by sparking of the overhead wires is limited. Apart from this, the luminaire is extremely maintenance free. As the luminaires burn for roughly 12 hours per day, Dutch Rail does not have to replace any light sources for 23 years. This has saved Dutch Rail a lot of money on maintenance ever since then.

RWS Merwede en Maas

In 2007 a new berth for vessels carrying dangerous goods has been built the outer harbour of Gorinchem. The mooring place has been provided with IMT luminaires as assigned by the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management (RWS), water district Merwede & Maas. The organisation puts great emphasis on user friendliness and quality whenever new products are purchased. In 2007 a new berth for vessels carrying dangerous goods has been built the outer harbour of Gorinchem. The mooring place has been provided with IMT luminaires as assigned by the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management (RWS), water district Merwede & Maas. As manager of the ‘wet infrastructure’, RWS Merwede & Maas is responsible for a smooth and safe marine traffic in this area. The organisation puts great emphasis on user friendliness and quality whenever new products are purchased.

Therefore, the new lighting had to meet specific requirements, in particular:

  • no management or hardly any management and maintenance of the lighting
  • the lighting must not dazzle the marine traffic
  • high product quality at a fair price
  • good service during but also after installation of the product
  • uniformity of lighting on different locations.

On the basis of these criteria and after extensive research, RWS Merwede & Maas has opted for IMT luminaires. “As the luminaires are often installed on locations that are difficult to reach, we must be absolutely certain that the lighting will indeed function. With the luminaires of IMT this is absolutely certain”, says Robert Saaleman, interim project manager at the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management, water district Merwede & Maas. “Besides, IMT guarantees the performance of these luminaires for ten years. This means that it simply has to be a reliable system.”

RWS Stellendam

The Dutch Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management (RWS), Province of Zuid-Holland Department has applied Helios IQL street lighting on a number of locations. Both in Stellendam and at the Volkerak locks and the Goeree lock, RWS has selected these luminaires. The IQL lighting is mainly used on locations that are difficult to reach, especially alongside the quay walls and guard walls and on scaffolding

RWS has opted for the Helios IQL luminaires with good reason. "Maintenance free and safety are top priorities for us. These IQL luminaires are not affected by the salty sea air and can handle quite a bit", says Willem Voogd, Object Inspector at water district Haringvliet of the RWS, Province of Zuid-Holland Department.
The Helios IQL luminaires hardly need any maintenance and their tube of corrosion proof aluminium is resistant to the salty sea air. Wind and vibrations will not have any impact on the performance of this lighting. Meanwhile, the lock complexes are illuminated by IMT luminaires already since six years.

Street lighting Municipality of Utrecht

onderhoudsvrije straatverlichting in de gemeente Utrecht

The Municipality of Utrecht applies Helios IQL luminaires along a number of roads by way of test. Engineering firm IBU of the Municipality of Utrecht had approached IMT for this test to gain experience with the technique, lifetime and lighting quality of IQL. The pilot project has been set up and carried out in collaboration with Essent Lighting who was also interested. The test runs as long as mast/luminaire combination remains intact.

The Helios IQL street lighting is vandalism proof and vibration resistant, maintenance free, and has an extremely long lifetime. Especially in combination with the composite mast (delivered by mast manufacturer Kaal Masten) it is a sustainable, maintenance free lighting system. No premature malfunctions occur on and the number of lamps that need to be replaced has dropped (which also means less road closures). Because of these features the lighting system has dramatically increased the uninterrupted flow of traffic.

The Municipality of Utrecht applies the Helios IQL lighting in particular on roads where stagnations in the flow of traffic are highly unwelcome, such as the Leidseweg. The system is especially suitable along district roads and access routes, ring roads and in industrial zones. It is also perfectly fit to illuminate provincial roads and parking places alongside motorways.
"I can recommend anyone to test the applicability of the IQL luminaire if they have to replace or renew luminaires. The design of the luminaire is functional/decorative and the performance is excellent”, says Arthur Klink, senior adviser at Engineering firm IBU of the Municipality of Utrecht.
